Queen of Make Believe

Queen of Make Believe

Kelly ran around the yard all afternoon
Knew she’d be the queen of daddy’s living room
Nothing ever came between herself and me
Swore it up and down one day I’d be her king
We built ourselves a castle underneath the stairs
And filled it full of love and noisy rocking chairs
And only a child can feel this way
Ain’t no other way to feel about it
And I know why I feel the rain
Nothing good has ever come without it
We fell asleep to dream away the afternoon
Then caught a ride away on her hot air balloon
Laughing, dancing, singing, never feeling small
In a garden full of sunflowers ten feet tall
This world was all our own
The joy of never knowing this royal love affair
And only a child can feel this way
Ain’t no other way to feel about it
And I know why I feel the rain
Nothing good has ever come without it
This morning’s congregation’s lost inside the clock
Staring at the minute hand and its silent knock
The king of make believe has fallen off his throne
Never knew how far the fall down was below
And who will be the queen of all the afternoons
The queen of Abilene, the queen of make believe
And only a child can feel this way
Ain’t no other way to feel about it
And I know why I feel the rain
Nothing good has ever come without it
